Secured as first prize in an international design competition, the commission called for a high–density employment–led mixed use development on a 100 hectare site between the towns of Heerlen in Holland and Aachen in Germany.
Termed a ‘border–crossing’ project, and attracting significant European funding as a result, the scheme straddles the border between the two countries.
Detailed consultations with the Joint Steering Group set up by the two town councils formed the basis for a planning and access strategy, with a new dedicated light rail service provided through the heart of the scheme to link the two town centres. |
