PROJECTS > AACHEN - HEERLEN

Secured as first prize in an international design competition, the commission  called for a high–density employment–led mixed use development on a 100 hectare site between the towns of Heerlen in Holland and Aachen in Germany.

Termed a ‘border–crossing’ project, and attracting significant European funding as a result, the scheme straddles the border between the two countries.

Detailed consultations with the Joint Steering Group set up by the two town councils formed the basis for a planning and access strategy, with a new dedicated light rail service provided through the heart of the scheme to link the two town centres.

Production of detailed masterplan, design guidelines and implementation of access infrastructure and public realm, coupled with Phase 1 buildings.
